What I Read in 2023

S.K. Jacklyn

“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” C.S. Lewis.

As I mentioned in my 2023 Year in Review, I read 28 books last year! Not as many as I have some years, but I’ve never had a baby before 😉

Fiction

The 10 fiction books I read were:
1.-3. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
4. Delicious! by Ruth Reichl
5.-7. The Remnant Trilogy by Tim Chaffey and K. Marie Adams
8. Cabin Girl by E.G. Bella
9. A Lineage of Grace by Francine Rivers
10. The Princess Bride by William Goldman

It is so hard to pick my favorite of these fiction books, as 7 of them are some of my favorites! The Lord of the Rings is one of my go-to favorite book and movie series, The Remnant trilogy is a series I can read in only a couple sittings, and I am partial to Cabin Girl not only because it’s a great story but also because it’s written by a friend!

What are your favorite fiction stories you’ve read recently?

In my 2024 fiction reading, I’m thinking about re-reading a couple favorite such as Narnia and The Giver. Another fiction author I really want to try out is Nadine Brandes. I keep hearing so many good things about her books!

Nonfiction

The 18 nonfiction books I read this year were:
1. 10 Books that Screwed up the World: and 5 Others That Didn’t Help by Benjamin Wiker
2. Becoming a Welcoming Church by Thom S. Rainer
3. M is for Mama by Abbie Halberstadt
4. Becoming Free Indeed by Jinger Dugger Vuolo
5. Homemaking by J.R. Miller
6. Reformation Women by Rebecca VanDoodewaard
7. Eternity in Their Hearts by Don Richardson
8. Mimosa by Amy Carmichal
9. Seeing Christ in All of Scripture by Peter A. Lillback, Vern S. Poythress, Iain M. Duguid, G.K. Beale, and Richard B. Gaffin Jr.
10. Missions by Andy Johnson
11. The Freedom of Simplicity by Richard J. Foster
12. No Shortcuts to Success by Matt Rhodes
13. What’s So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey
14. The 1689 Baptist Confession by Various
15. Desiring God by John Piper
16. The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith in Modern English from Founders Press
17. The Savage my Kinsman by Elisabeth Elliot
18. The Gospel by Ray Ortlund

Again, it is hard to choose favorites, but I think I would have to go with The Savage my Kinsman by Elisabeth Elliot, Desiring God by John Piper, and Eternity in Their Hearts by Don Richardson.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think about them?

In 2024, I would like to read more nonfiction, especially biographies about famous (or not so famous) Christians, and more theology-type books.

If you curious about any of the books I’ve mentioned here, please feel free to comment, send me an email, or talk to me in person (if you know me 🙂 ) I love talking about books!
