As of this morning, my husband and I are now land owners! We are so excited! Here are a few pictures of our property:
We now own 12 acres of bare land. It is on the edge of a tiny unincorporated town, so we get all the benefits of living in the country, with a couple perks of being close to town.
Most of the land is wooded with different kinds of trees. My husband will be cutting some of these down to build our log cabin.
But don’t worry, we love woods! Most of the trees will be staying. It will be a great place for us and our children to explore.
About one of the acres is open field. This will be a great place for a garden, animals, bonfires, games, and picnics. This part of the property is also right next to a small park, baseball field, and woodland trails. Our little boy will have so much space to run around, play, and meet new friends at the park!
This is a possible site for the house. The front porch would face the field, while the back part of the house would be nestled in the woods. There’s a lot of work to be done!
Now that we own this land, my husband will spend most of October and November logging and milling trees for the house. He’ll go to work early so he can get off early and work on the land with a couple hours of daylight. He’ll probably have one other person on site with him every day and the hope is to cut and mill one tree a day. On the weekends, we will have a few more people and be able to get more done. We could also clear some brush and undergrowth at this time.
Once the trees are cut and milled, it will be time to give the land (and my husband!) a break. The logs can dry over the winter and we can do all the paperwork needed to build the house. Then baby will come and we will both be absorbed in our new little one.
Once spring arrives and all the necessary paperwork is finished, it will be time for the foundation, well, and septic. After those are put in, the summer and early fall will be spent building the house itself. We have to be out of our apartment by June, so during a lot of that time we will be “camping” on the land while we finish the house. I am really excited for that and I think it’ll be a lot of fun. The baby and I will be able to spend a lot of time outside and we will save travel time by living right next to the house site. Just like little house on the prairie, but easier. 🙂
We are so happy and excited to be land owners! I will try to keep this blog and my writer Instagram page up to date on house progress over the next year. Watch for land and house updates!
