Building Update

Building Update

S.K. Jacklyn

There has been a lot happening for our building project the last couple months! We’ve continued to spend most of our time at our land, and we love it. Baby J is so happy to be outside most of the time, and we are too. We’ve had a lot of help already and gotten a lot done!

Here are the main things that happened recently:

We started using our sawmill!

Our sawmill came at the end of June, and we’ve been using it almost every night. We put a good foundation in so it will stay level and secure. Then came the task of putting it together, and then starting to saw. We made some beautiful and useful boards just from the leftover lumber from the loggers and cut a lot of 2x4s for our shed from pine trees my husband cut down from our woods.

The Driveway got put in!

We didn’t know when they were going to do this, but one day, all the machines showed up. The driveway looks great and it makes everything else much easier!

Our building permit got approved!

Often for owner-builders this takes a couple tries, so we were thrilled when our permit was approved on the first try! My husband worked so hard to make sure everything was as it should be. The plans are on a big obnoxious sign at the edge of our property so everyone can see them. Now we can start building!

We started building our shed!

Having a shed will make storing and finding tools so much easier. We were using storage tents temporarily, but they kept blowing away and had become quite the mess. We put the foundation for the shed in awhile ago, but now that we have a sawmill, my husband and some of our siblings made fast work of the floor and walls! It will be finished soon!

They started the house foundation!

This is probably the most exciting thing that has happened around here recently. We have visible progress on the house! So far, they have dug a big hole and poured the footers. We will have a basement soon!

If you can’t tell, I am super excited about all of this! Some of the next things that are happening are finishing the shed, getting the basement poured, and milling the logs for the house!
